Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef

The Cairns marina contains a fleet which includes a number of very amazing dive vessels. The most recent member in this fleet is the Seastar, only launched this past year.

This particular gorgeous completely new boat is 70 feet long, and tends to make an excursion out to Seastar’s scuba sites in under an hour or so. The charter boat is simply really fast as well as safe, with a lot of shaded and air-conditioned interior area.

Seastar Cruises also has always prided itself on offering a very distinctive and personalized trip, and they seem to be varying their specific operations in order to improve the small group feel which these products have constantly provided.

All of us love the simple fact that their operators limit the numbers on the boat to merely forty five customers, clearly less than the capacity of the vessel; that means that there will be tons of room on board. Because of a quicker charter boat they could abandon a bit less early, yet still often be the actual very first boat to go to see Michaelmas Cay, hence snorkelers along with birdwatchers have it just about all to themselves. This kind of tour will be the A-list escape meant for birdwatchers that would like to mix a wonderful reef trip with a probability to witness exotic seabird species.

Your speedier trip out there also means a whole lot more precious time can be spent on Michaelmas Cay in addition to Seastar’s other scuba mooring within Hastings Reef; visitors may currently spend in excess of 5 hrs out there on the ocean.

All the Great Barrier Reef is exceptional in many ways, and one particular is that it is actually the wintertime home to the only real known white-colored whale out there.

This whale, a huge 20-year-old Humpback whale nicknamed “Migaloo”, which means white colored man in some sort of native aboriginal language, spends his summer months living in Antarctica, after that almost all years migrates northward to the wintertime calving and mating grounds about the northern Great Barrier Reef.

Migaloo was just noticed off Port Douglas this past week, the initial sighting of the one-of-a-kind whale since his migration southward to Antarctica a year ago.

Merely the spotting of this particular special whale is usually big news here in Cairns. The Cairns Story, the neighborhood newspaper, produced a cover report about the sighting, which include both a front page picture as well as inside flip out poster.

This isn’t just the only place where this particular whale has an effect, as seen by the following stories that also showcased Migaloo these past few weeks:

Throughout June Migaloo was basically the main poster boy connected with (blank) a set of direct orders in opposition to the military training exercise close to Shoalwater Bay, located in the central zone of the Great Barrier Reef. These exercises were collectively carried out by the United states and Australian armed service forces. Demonstrators have been anxious how the intense sonar which will be these days a feature associated with such actions would certainly cause harm to whale numbers, including Migaloo. Generally there does appear to be reliable proof linking aquatic mammal fatalities by working with such sonar, and considering the hot debate it seems like unusual how the exercises could be scheduled around a widely known whale migration path during a period when whales are generally close by.

Additionally this season, there seemed to be a dispute as soon as a local person successfully copyrighted the phrase “migaloo”. Even though news stories described the person associated with the trademark as a man who wanted to use the trademark as an easy way of raising money to be able to save whales, other people thought it a commercial intrusion on mother nature and also aboriginal traditions.

Miglaoo even has got on to Video hosting site’s., which means he’s got super star status which challenges Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. We’ve still to check out Facebook itself or Myspace . com for Migaloo’s site, although it’s certain that in the instance that he’s created a page, he’s got lots of great friends!

A Cape York River Crossing

Leaving normality behind at Cairns, we journeyed up the Peninsula Developmental Road. This further deteriorated in to a dusty corrugated trail which wound along the route of the telegraph line, between giant termite mounds and across numerous rivers as much as the little Aboriginal city of Bamaga on Cape York. “The beginning of HELL — get back if you can”, announced an amusing handwritten sign even as we headed off into the wilderness!

River crossings of almost all manner and form interupted our own journey — with axle-deep mud, decaying wooden bridges (the actual odd log missing here and there to add to the task), deep dust or fast flowing water to keep you busy. It was a traditional four wheel drive journey. The grandest challenge, however, was the crossing in the Jardine River.

Even in the dry season, the Jardine River, just 35 km south of Bamaga, is a wide, one metre deep, fast-flowing river. In 1983, the luxury of a little ferry had just become offered to carry the vehicles carrying the less foolish across this famous barrier for that princely sum of $20. Many husband and wife battles then erupted by the banks of the Jardine because cautious wives and thrill-seeking husbands debated the relative merits from the challenging river crossing and also the tame punt ride. As newlyweds, we too had the dispute here, but in our case it was the adventure-seeking wife that desired the river journey!

To drive across a river such as this requires lots of preparation. A diesel motor like ours requires a lengthy air snorkel to attract air from well above any possible water level. Tyres must be deflated, waterproof covers packed across the engine and openings such as fuel tanks and doors should be thoroughly waterproofed. We watched with dread as numerous vehicles attempted the crossing — and several failed, becoming stuck mid-river with the crocodile infested waterss swirling across the driver’s feet and camping gear floating at the back of the vehicle!

Finally the adventure-seeking wife won out. A group of fellow Patrol travellers came to our help and gave us a snorkel along with covers which fitted the vehicle. So with our vehicle set up like a Christmas turkey, we drove down to the muddy waters of the Imposing Jardine.

Across the river all of us drove, pushing a moderate bow-wave ahead of us. John said it felt so excellent he wanted to change direction and keep driving the river! Then through a heart-stopping very deep hole near the end and up the steep bank we drove, masters of the Jardine. I bet they do not have this much fun if you do one of the organised Cape York Tours.

Our wet vehicle on the other hand seemed little the worse for its adventure. However, it cost us more to exchange the gearbox oils that had become waterlogged as opposed to little punt ride would have cost. So sanity prevailed on our return journey a month later and the Landcruiser got a drier ride over the Jardine on the car punt!
